For more than ten years, Lil’ Rick has churned out ultra-popular tunes year after year, backed by high level performances sure to delight his fans and enthral audiences. On Sunday, January 10 at this year’s staging of the Barbados Music Awards (BMA), he walked away as Barbados’ Entertainer of the Decade. When the decade began, Rick was one of the island’s hottest deejays, both on and off-the-air and his popularity as a soca artiste was also on the rise. Best known for his ‘fancy juks and stabs’, Lil’ Rick a.k.a. Hypa Dawg, a.k.a. Chihuahua Business Man released hit after hit and copped several titles over the ten year period. In the 2001 Party Monarch competition he placed second with ‘Ent Missing’. Then we saw a more serious side from him in 2002, when he made it to the finals of the Pic-O-De-Crop where he eventually placed fourth. In that same year, he accomplished a major feat when he won both the Party Monarch and Road March titles with his hit single ‘Hypa Dawg’. Official opening of Dominica's Carnival - The real MAS 2010 - set for Saturday Published on Saturday, January 23, 2010 Carnival OpeningROSEAU, Dominica -- Officials from the Carnival Development Committee have promised an extravagant display of originality, colour and pageantry for the opening parade and official ceremony for Dominica’s carnival, ‘The Real Mas’ 2010. A wide variety of groups, costume bands, carnival queen contestants and other individuals from across the country are expected to assemble and proceed from 3 pm starting on Victoria Street in Roseau, passing along the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard and culminating at the Pottersville Savannah. The official opening ceremony, which will begin at 6.30pm, will hear addresses from Ministers of Government as well as officials from the Carnival Development Committee.

According to Carnival Coordinator Vaughn Walter, plans are shaping well for what has been dubbed the Caribbean’s greatest summer festival. “As we speak, we are conducting several meetings with all the relevant stakeholders to determine the steps which need to be taken to ensure that we have a spectacular event; one that we can be proud of.” Walter added that a foundation will be laid out to look at the marketing strategies and ways to promote the various segments of the summer festival. Calypsonians, mas builders and other people desirous of participating in the event are also asked to indicate their interest at the Carnival office to facilitate the smooth flow of the registration process which will be announced at a later date.

DWAYNE McLEOD, Sizzla Popular Rastafarian reggae artiste Sizzla Kalonji was arrested on Wednesday by police personnel from the St Andrew Central police following reports that gunshots were fired at a group of persons at a river in August Town. Crime chief for the division, Deputy Superintendent Derrick 'Cowboy' Knight, told THE WEEKEND STAR that the entertainer, born Miguel Orlando Collins, was taken into custody following the shooting incident. "The incident occurred sometime around 8:15 p.m and we responded and Sizzla was arrested about 15 minutes later," DSP Knight said before adding that Sizzla is in the process of being interrogated and his hands were also swabbed for gunpowder. identified Sizzla Reports summarise that a number of persons were catching water at a river when an armed man approached them and fired several shots in their direction. No one was injured. Further reports are that a number of persons subsequently reported to the police and identified Sizzla as the shooter. Asked what is the theorised reason behind the shooting, Knight, though not confirming, explained that a number of areas in August Town are currently at odds. San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago - Sunday January 31st, 2009 - Karma's Ravi Bissambhar was crowned the new king of the Chutney Soca Arena last night at Skinner Park San Fernando. Ravi B knocked off reigning champion Moses Charles (3rd place) and veteran chutney star Rikki Jai (2nd), to claim his place as the 2010 Chutney Soca Monarch. The new kid on the block, K.I. (from JMC 3Veni) finished 4th, while Omadath Maharaj and Hunter placed 5th and 6th respectively. Ravi walks away with a grand prize of $200,000, Rikki Jai $100,000, Moses claimed $60,000 and K.I. receives a $40,000 prize for 4th place. The other six finalists each will receive $30,000.
