Thirty-six year old Soca ambassador, Machel Montano has been ordered to pay a total of $27,200 in fines and compensation in the assault case which saw victim, Russel Pollanais hospitalized for some time. The entertainer was found guilty on five charges- four of which were for assaulting Zen nightclub patrons Gerard Bowrin, Brandis Browne, Janelle Lee Chee, and Russell Pollonais in April, 2007. The fifth charge was for Montano’s use of obscene language. Today’s sentencing followed a previous sentencing adjournment on January 17. Sentencing was also passed on fellow accused Kernel Roberts- the son of the late Lord Aldwyn ‘Kitchener’ Roberts. He was ordered to pay a total of $24,000 in fines and compensation. Sentencing was scheduled for 9am this morning, however due to heavy traffic coming into Port-of-Spain, the magistrate announced a delayed sentencing at 1 o’clock this afternoon. Montano is the current title holder of the International Groovy soca monarch. He also shares the title of Power Soca Monarch with veteran soca artiste, Austin ‘Superblue’ Lyons. The much anticipated clash between soca heavyweights Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons and Machel Montano at Friday's Play Whe International Power Soca Monarch produced a result that most did not expect. Billed as the showdown between the student (Machel) and the teacher (SuperBlue), the judges could not separate the two after they delivered crowd pleasing performances at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain that went into the wee hours of Saturday morning (today). Machel urged his supporters to get off the ground and float in his delivery of "Float" while SuperBlue, who had the crowd chanting his name long before he took to the stage, had patrons bouncing to his aptly titled piece, "Fantastic Friday." In the end, they had to split the spoils and the bragging rights while Rodney "Benjai Le Blanc sang his way to third place. (Trinidad Express) Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor intends to sentence soca superstar Machel Montano on five criminal charges on February 25. Montano, the headline act for several Carnival 2013 fetes, including his own show Machel Monday scheduled for February 4, had previously assured his fans that he would be performing this Carnival in the face of his court hearing today. For almost three hours this morning, lawyers representing Montano and his co-defendant, songwriter and producer Kernal Roberts, who was found guilty on two assault charges, and those representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, made legal submissions to the magistrate before a packed to capacity courtroom, at the Port of Spain Magistrates Court. The legal arguments surrounded whether or not the two defendants can be sentenced to community service for the offences. “There was a mini-stampede to get into the courtroom,” Express reporter Rickie Ramdass said, adding that at times police officers had to lock the doors to the courtroom to prevent fans and other people from entering.
